3D PRINTS

The stiff white material is made of PLA recycled plastic printed onto 100% silk fabric. The hexagons represents the dopamine chemical formula received by the brain as a result of using technology and social media.

Laser Cutting

Creating a textile brain design that is engraved into the fabric using a laser cutter machine. The delicately engraved detail symbolises the health and well-being side of the collection that brings the message of importance of health and well-being in people’s daily lives.

Fabric Manipulation

The detail was created to represent the spine bone of the human body that can be heavily impacted from the long hourly usage of technology. It can result in loss of the natural curvature of the neck and slumping of the upper back.

Collection Statement

Behind the Screens addresses the negative aspects of technology and social media usage on health and well-being. Analysing how it affects the human brain and what makes us crave for more. Millennials and generation z have developed a symbiotic-like relationship with their electronics, yet appear to have lost touch with one another and the art of face-to-face communication. The dependency on technology is no longer a bad habit but an addiction.  The overuse of technology not only leads to restlessness, headaches and increased stress levels but it has consequences on mental health too. A 2018 British study has shown that social media lead to delayed sleep, lack of self-confidence and depression. It is proven that technology addiction operates similarly to chemical addiction and should be treated as seriously. The aim of the collection is to highlight the dark side of technology and to raise awareness, especially among younger generations of how influential technology can be. By creating awareness, I hope to help equip the younger generation to make sensible and educated decisions regarding their usage resulting in a healthier relationship with technology. Growing up in an older generation, gave me the opportunity to have a childhood where instead of a WI-FI connection, there was a connection between people. This is rarely seen in the present.

Two important innovative textile creation techniques were utilised in order to explore the concept. The first involves white 3D printing hexagons made out of PLA recycled plastic on 100% natural silk organza, these represent the dopamine chemical formula and is what we experience when using technology.  The second is laser cutting on white and grey deadstock fabric, a delicately engraved print of a multi-brain design which reflects the effect of technology on the brain. The rigid uncomfortable components combined with fitted silhouettes encapsulate the body, creating futuristic garments that represent the stiff feeling associated with the hourly use of technology.

The collection was made to plant seeds of hope and awakening, for people to be more mindful, question themselves, and create a balanced, healthier lifestyle. I hope to continue developing my portfolio with collections that raise awareness and focus on issues surrounding us within the industry today.
